Topic – Sustainable Infrastructure and Built Environment

Abstract

Sustainable development is increasingly emerging as an important factor and now plays a major role in various disciplines. Specifically, in the discipline of sustainable infrastructure and built environment, sustainable development holds the key in designing and implementing projects that are aimed at restricting the negative impacts (e.g. climate change). These negative impacts, such as climate change are now widely understood to hold adverse implications for the social and poverty outcomes. Integrating different components of development goals in an infrastructure development requires systems approach in multi scale, for multi-user, with multi-stage (i.e. at policy, plan, program, and project). Besides this, a trans-disciplinary and holistic approach is required to focus on both vertical (incl. among different scales) and horizontal (incl. among different sectors) integration. In this new era of development where infrastructure development is intricately linked to the local and global sustainability as well as other development goals, this talk aims to enhance the awareness of engineering and related professionals involved in developing and managing infrastructure (e.g. energy, transportation, water, etc.), and the built environment (including buildings, facilities, public parks, etc.). With relevant examples, the talk is also expected to take a global view and place it in a regional/national/local context, considered as academically and linked to practical applications in both public and private sectors.
