The event was held in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Vietnam, providing participants an opportunity to attend and learn from experts in the field.

During the seminar, Dr. Naveed Anwar, Vice President for Knowledge Transfer at AIT, shared his insights on the latest Trends and Advancements in Structural Design of Bridges, while Mr. Thaung Htut Aung, Director of AIT Solutions, presented on the latest Trends and Advancements in Structural Design of Tall Buildings.

The seminar provided a platform for professionals to network and exchange ideas, paving the way for future collaborations and partnerships in the field of construction.

AIT Solutions (AITS) conducted the Performance-based Seismic Design of The Proscenium at Rockwell, and worked closely with SY^2+Associates, Philippines (Structural Engineer of Record), and Rockwell Land Corporation, Philippines (Developer) to carry out highly detailed earthquake simulations to check and improve the structural performance as well as cost-effectiveness.

The Proscenium at Rockwell is one of over 150 tall buildings for which AITS in-house team has conducted performance-based seismic design.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 9th November 2022 between the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the CIC Technology and Consultancy JSC (CIC) to enable cooperation for conducting knowledge transfer and technical support activities in the fields of structural engineering and software development.

The activities under the scope of the MoU includes knowledge transfer seminars on topics involving structural engineering (structural performance-based design, wind tunnel testing, and structural health monitoring) and allied fields such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), software applications in structural engineering, and training on CSI software and relevant structural engineering topics for engineers in Vietnam.

Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto, AIT President, highlighted AIT’s role as a pioneer institution to help meet the region’s growing needs for advanced learning in engineering, science, technology, management, research, and capacity building. Prof. Yamamoto said, “AIT Solution’s core strength is structural engineering and software development, which can complement CIC’s strength in the application of information technology throughout the construction industry. This collaboration will initiate various joint activities with CIC in conducting knowledge transfer seminars on Building Information Modeling, Structural Engineering, and Software Applications in Structural Engineering. I am confident that this partnership will be mutually beneficial and successful.”

Considering the multifaceted nature of the challenges that the world is facing, this issue provides a glimpse into the multifaceted world of research based innovative solutions in various sectors, by bringing together research, solutions, and discussions from experts and authors in the field of wind engineering, water engineering, nanotechnology, urban environment management, and construction management.

Some of the advancements in researching, and devising innovative and smarter solutions that are covered in this issue, include: application of nanotechnology in infrastructure and medicines, satellite based monitoring and conserving of earth’s freshwater resources, applying circular economy, rethinking and redesigning of our consumption pattern and waste management, and deployment of digital technologies for construction management.

CTBUH Sri Lanka Chapter in association with Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand organized webinar CTBUH Colombo Forum Spring 2021: Future Trends of Structural Analysis & Design on 16th March 2021. From AIT the speakers included: Dr. Naveed Anwar – Vice President for Knowledge Transfer, Mr. Thaung Htut Aung – Director of AIT Solutions, Mr. Keerati Tunthasuwatana, Head of ACECOMS, and Mr. Shabir Ali Talpur – Manager in Civil & Structural Engineering Unit of AIT Solutions.

The topics that were covered by AIT experts included: Performance-based Seismic Design using ETABS and Perform 3D, Introduction of CSi Programs and their Features, and Impacts of New Technologies in Tall Building Structural Design.

The Forum was chaired by Mr. Shiromal Fernando, CTBUH Sri Lanka Country Representative. Besides the AIT experts, Prof. Priyan Mendis, Professor of Civil Engineering, University of Melbourne also presented at the Forum.

Structural Health Monitoring and Post-earthquake Response Assessment of Tall Buildings: Providing a comprehensive method for “Post-earthquake Response Assessment” by efficiently using the recorded acceleration data. This assessment provides the developers, residents, building managers, structural engineers, and government authorities with the structural assessment results and an overall picture of the seismic risk posed by the recent earthquake event.

Open Innovation Practices in Thai Software SMEs – External Technology Acquisition and Exploitation to Improve Software Process Innovation: Considers the importance of Software Process Innovation Performance (SPIP) and its improvement that can be achieved by increasing firms’ ability to access external technological knowledge, ideas, and information, and provides a new insight to Software SMEs managers on how to use open innovation to improve their SPIP.

Producing Rice Straw Pellet Fuel for Multiple Benefits: Focuses on the research conducted by air quality group at AIT on Rice Straw Field Open Burning (RSFOB) emissions and their assessment on its impact on air quality and climate, as well as identification of alternatives to recover energy from this agricultural waste, thereby allowing farmers to commoditize waste prone to burning.

Besides the above mentioned articles, A perspective from AIT on the roles of higher education institutions in knowledge transfer to drive social impact is also covered in this issue.

The seminar was organized considering the increase in housing insecurity due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. During the seminar the experts discussed that with the people under financial stress, there are concerns of housing debt repayments, and increase in housing costs vs financial insecurity. The experts during the seminar also deliberated on the impact of the rising economic stress and housing vulnerability on the targets and indicators under SDG 11, specifically “ensuring access for all to adequate, safe, and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums”. The seminar provided an inclusive dialogue among the various stakeholders to alleviate the challenges and issues related to housing insecurity. With these issues as a backdrop, the experts from international and national agencies, ASEAN government stakeholders, and experts from relevant field came together during the seminar to collaborate, and explore policies interventions and solutions.
