25-29 June 2018, Los Angeles
The Eleventh U.S. National Conference on Earthquake Engineering was held in downtown Los Angeles, California from 25-29 June 2018. It was hosted by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) in collaboration with federal and local partners. The theme for this year conference was Integrating Science, Engineering anf Policy, showcasing nearly 1,200 presentations over the period of four days divided into plenary, concurrent theme, technical, 5 in 5 presentations, and poster sessions.
Dr. Naveed Anwar, Executive Director, AIT Solutions, submitted a conference paper with co-author S. A. Reddy his former student, now part of his Civil and Structural Engineering Unit on Seismic Performance Evaluation of High-Rise Building with RC Flag Wall systems. The paper evaluates the seismic performance of flag wall structural systems (i.e. the RC walls in selected floors, not reaching the foundation) used as an alternative to the conventional outrigger system and also provided the detailed analysis is carried out for various configurations of flag walls using a case study of a high-rise RC building. The use of flag walls as part of lateral load-resisting system can significantly improve the structural performance of high-rise buildings, and therefore, the idea can be further considered for detailed evaluation under different loading scenarios.
Dr. Naveed Anwar also joined the dinner reception hosted by Computer and Structures Inc., USA to celebrate the invaluable contributions of Ray Clough and Edward Wilson to the earthquake engineering profession through their numerical models. The event was an incredible social networking event and inspired the next generation of earthquake risk reduction professionals.
