November 2017, Thailand
Mr. Doley Tshering and Mr. Tashi Dorji from United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Bangkok Regional Hub visited AIT Solutions on 6 November 2017. Mr. Tshering and Mr. Dorji are the Regional Technical Advisers on Ecosystems and Biodiversity for Global Environment Finance under UNDP. Mr. Tshering and Mr. Dorji visited the premises of AIT Solutions to discuss the overall plan for the assessment of wildlife crime databases.
Mr. Tshering and Mr. Dorji reiterated that AIT serves as the unique, international yet neutral platform with strong convening power in the region and relevant resources in the nexus of engineering, conservation and management, which is ideal to advance work on sensitive issues critical for sustainable development. They also added that AIT Solutions, with its WEMS Secretariat, [ilab] and ICT resources, is well-placed to undertake the assessment, cater appropriate solutions to address the challenges in managing enforcement related information and develop pertinent capacity in the region and beyond.
Recently, AIT and UNDP agreed to undertake an assessment of currently-operational wildlife crime information management mechanisms to identify gaps in wildlife crime information-sharing for monitoring enforcement, to establish information-sharing mechanism for enhanced environmental governance in Asia, and strengthen capacity for data collection and institution of community of practice for improved coordination and knowledge transference.
During discussions with Dr. Naveed Anwar, Mr. Tshering and Mr. Dorji expressed their confidence that the partnership will serve as a stepping stone for more fruitful work towards curbing illegal taking, trading, and trafficking of endangered species of wild fauna and flora in the region and beyond.
