The Affordable Housing Design Competition was organized by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) through AIT Consulting and Habitech Center to address the increasing affordable housing needs in Asia and the region. The competition targeted architecture students in Pakistan who attended the IAPEX 2015: archiTECHture “Technology in Architecture” in Lahore, Pakistan.

The participants were invited to design an innovative, affordable, environment-friendly, anddisaster-resilient housing for low income community in urban and sub-urban areas. They were required to submit a highly-developed, holistic architectural concept design consisting of a descriptive narrative and a conceptual design. The judging panel evaluated each entry based on cost-effectiveness, functionality, livability, social impact, innovation, green and sustainable aspect and disaster resilience, viability, and aesthetics.

The judging panel comprised of eight jurors including experts from Pakistan: Mr. Mohammad Pervaiz Vandal; Mr. Syed Tauseef Ahmad; Mr. Faheem Ahsan Jamil; Ms. Qurat-ul-ain Asghar; and Mr. Azhar M. Sualehi, and from AIT: Ms. Sudiksha Amatya; Mr. Gyanendra Sthapit:  and Dr. Naveed Anwar. Two first prize winners Mr. Burhan Karim and Mr. Syed Muahid Hussain were announced. They both received a certificate and a chance to work for an actual project in AIT for one week, including travel and accommodation expenses sponsored by AIT Consulting. The second prize went to Ms. Aroosa Mushtaq who received $500 and a certificate.
